The former Bolton and Newcastle boss is currently out of a job but has admitted that the challenge of replacing Keane, who resigned from his post on Thursday, is something he would consider.

"Sunderland are a great club so of course I'd be interested in talking to them," said Allardyce.

"I have huge respect for the chairman Niall Quinn and the job he's done.

"I also know how passionate the fans are about their team."
