Ball was caretaker manager for the final 10 games of the 05/06 season following the departure of Mick McCarthy, but he has since returned to his original role as assistant academy manager.

Peter Walker, Sunderland's Chief Executive, explained how Kevin Ball is held in high regard within the club.

"Kevin Ball is held in high regard by everyone at this football club. He did a fantastic job in difficult circumstances and we remain very grateful to him for this.

"He has returned to his academy position and it would be unfair to disrupt his pre-season preparations with a temporary role for what is at this stage is an indeterminate period.

"Kevin Richardson as reserve team coach already works with the first team players. He was therefore the obvious choice to oversee the early part of our pre-season preparations."
