Manchester City and Zimbabwe International Benjani Mwaruwari has gone back to Man City where is contract is due to expire, even though the striker will be available on a bosman free transfer he will not be offered a contract with the Black Cats.

Benjani came to Wearside as cover for injury but has played very little football, and at 31 year old Steve Bruce will be looking at younger options in the likes of AOL product Martyn Waghorn.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce "Benjani was a good signing for us at the time because we needed cover in case of injuries.

"In the end, he didn't play many games but the extra competition for places brought the best out of the other lads.

"I think Kenwyne in particular could see that Benjani was most likely to take his place and it was all about competition for places bringing the best out of players."
