Defender Misses Curtain Raiser

The Northern Ireland international defender has a hamstring injury which has restricted him to just over 20 minutes of match action during the Black Cats pre-season friendly fixtures and McCarthy does not see the left back being fit when the season gets underway on August 13th.

"George is not right. At the minute the injury has just got to settle down," the Sunderland boss told the clubs official website.
