Defender signs contract extension

Last updated : 09 October 2002 By Black Cats
Gray has made over 350 appearances for the Black Cats and the new deal will keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2006.

"I'm delighted to have the new contract sorted out. Negotiations have been going on for a little while now and it's great to have it done and dusted," he said.

"Now I just want to concentrate on my football and do well for the next four years."

Gray joined Sunderland as a trainee in 1992 and was given his first team debut by departing boss Peter Reid after he was appointed as manager in 1995.

"I was very close to the gaffer and it's strange that he's gone. I had a great relationship with him and he really helped my career," he said.

"I was absolutely devastated when I got the news that he'd gone. I called him as soon as I'd heard."
