The Norwegian international, who is fully aware that his season will be over if he decides to undergo surgery, has started just two games for the Black Cats after picking up the injury in his country's 1-0 win against Romania in October last year.

"I really just want to forget this season. I have been through several examinations and, when I get more answers, we have to decide what to do about it. Surgery is definitely an option but then my season will be over," he told Norwegian newspaper VG.

"This is not a normal thigh strain. It is obvious that the muscles cannot take a normal work load. When the injury came back recently, I had not put a great deal of pressure on the muscles. Therefore it worries me that things have gone wrong."
