The Sunderland boss also said that he believed that Sunderland's performance also warranted more than just a single point.

"We played well and did enough to win the game. We should have been out of sight long before they scored even though the lad took it well," he said after the game at The Stadium of Light.

"We are building on what we have done so far, but we have got to learn to kill games off. There was much to be proud of, I am delighted with the players.

"That's five points we've got, we know we have to finish out of the bottom three and that it's going to be tough to keep picking up points. There's been no shortage of effort and I am pleased with that.

"I thought Andy Welsh was different class before he ran out of steam towards the end. I can't speak highly enough of him considering where he has come from in the last 12 months."
