McCarthy In Defence Of McAteer

Moore claimed that the Black Cats midfielder only stayed on the pitch because of his name but McCarthy leapt to the defence of the Republic of Ireland international.

"I do not think Jason genuinely tried to hurt the player and one or two of the challenges on him were quite cynical," he said after the game at Millmoor.

"But from where I was sitting it was impossible to see exactly what happened."

McAteer received just a yellow card for the first half incident.
