The Sunderland boss decided to bring in players on the fringe of the first team against Huddersfield and Sunderland were made to pay, losing 4-2 to the third division side.

"We did not want to get beat, but it was my decision to rotate," said McCarthy.

"That is my squad I have got now to play with, and it was my decision to rotate it, my responsibility.

"Anybody wanting to lay blame at anybody's door, which I am sure they will do when you get beat 4-2, then they can put it fairly and squarely at my feet.

"I still thought we had enough quality on the park and players on the park, certainly not to be beaten 4-2."
