"I don't think we deserved to be beaten overall," the Black Cats boss said after the 2-1 defeat at Craven Cottage.

"I thought we were by far and away the better team in the first half, but we did not defend well on their first goal and the ball ended up in the net.

"On the sending-off I thought Steve was unfortunate. I think he clipped his legs, but I don't think it was on purpose. A free-kick maybe, but a sending-off? I think it was a bit harsh.

"It's about personal pride and having a bit of dignity.

"It was a fabulous strike by Liam for our goal. He has had a great three or four games and that capped it off. I haven't enjoyed the result here but I did enjoy the game."
