"We have been negotiating for a while but, when we failed to reach an agreement, it was time for both parties to put an end to it," he told VG.
"It is a bit sad. Sunderland are a terrific club with a great manager, fantastic fans and it's a place where we were enjoying ourselves.
"But I am not particularly worried and expect things to be resolved during the summer."
