The Wearside outfit have been linked with numerous managers, most notably Sam Allardyce and Alan Curbishley.

But any chance of appointing a "world-class" manager must have taken a big blow tonight when Sunderland slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Gigg Lane. Bury, bottom of the Football League, knocked Sunderland out of the Carling Cup.

Arnau was sent off early on but surely a team in the Championship SHOULD have been able to handle it!

Reports are suggesting Niall Quinn has resigned from his role as Sunderland manager. More to follow...
