"Matt has been in all the squads this season but he just needs games," McCarthy said.
"He has missed a lot of football, played a handful of games in three years and that does have an effect on you when you come back.
"He is doing more now, he is out there training every day and is involved. He still needs more of it but he is getting closer and getting better."
