Piper, who has managed just 24 appearances for Sunderland since his move from Leicester City three years ago, has signed a one year extension on his present dea that ties him to the club until the summer of 2008.

"The last year has been difficult for me personally but the club has been extremely supportive as I've worked to overcome my injury," he told the clubs official website.

"They have provided expert medical care and first-class rehab. This is my chance to repay the faith and support that the club has shown in me and to show the Sunderland fans how much I appreciate their support.

"I am settled at Sunderland, and to be able to pledge my long-term future as the club returns to the top flight is great.

"I'm looking forward to playing my part in the Premiership campaign."
