Play for pride says McCarthy

The defeat at Upton Park has left Sunderland 11 points adrift of safety with only seven games of the season remaining and McCarthy said: "I won't concede until we are finally down.

"The players should play for personal pride, for the club and for the supporters. If the worst should happen then at least they might be able to say they won a few games."

"The job when I came in was to try and retain our Premiership status, but if that did not happen then the next part was to plan for next season," said McCarthy.

"Unfortunately it looks like we are getting nearer to the latter part.

"We are in this position because we are the worst team. You can be unlucky once, but not 30 times."
