The former Oxford midfielder was linked with an attractive move to Liverpool back in January, but his form slumped in the second half of the season as Sunderland dropped out of the Premiership with a mere tally of 15 points.
"The club has received an offer for Dean," said Stadium of Light chief executive Peter Walker.
"But this has been rejected.
"Dean is an important part of our plans."
