Defender Santiago Vergini joined goalkeeper Oscar Ustari in making his debut against Andy Thorn’s side, with both playing the full 90 minutes as Sunderland teed up an FA Cup with Budweiser fifth round tie against Southampton.

Gus Poyet: “Oscar was confident, he had one very important action at the beginning of the game and he saved it and then he was calm and relaxed because he is an experienced goalkeeper.

“Santiago did well. He tried to go forward, tried to push it, tried to make an extra pass and he knows the game well.

“I thought it was interesting to see what he can bring to us here with this different kind of football game we have here in England.”
