Sunderland boss Ricky Sbragia has admitted that he is looking at five potential signing to strengthen the squad, but rumoured Danny Shittu is not one of them.

"We are checking on a number of players."

"We have made enquiries about five, and we're just waiting to see back to see where we stand."There's one we've got our eye on and if we bring him in, then he should be starting on Tuesday's game against Fulham."

"We'll have to wait and see. We might have one in by Tuesday, we might have two, we really just have to see how the weekend goes."

"We've actually just put feelers out as things stand, so we have to wait to see what the feedback is before we can see if we can do a bit of business."

"The manager reiterated that his priority remains defenders - injuries to Nyron Nosworthy and Danny Collins in the weekend's game against Aston Villa have increased the club's need.He said: "

"When those two went off, we only had four fit defenders to call on in total and clearly that's not a good situation."

"Thankfully Danny Collins looks as though he will be available for the weekend but we're still down to the bare bones."Of the five players we've got under consideration in terms of bringing players into the club, four are defenders and one is a midfielder."

"But we're not expecting to get all five in. We've just looked at players who we think would suit us, we've identified who those players might be and we wait to see if we can make something happen."

"Reports that a Sunderland move for Bolton Wanderers defender Danny Shittu is almost completed is wide of the mark, however. "He's not one that we've looked at, no, not at all."
