Carl Robinson is poised to join Sunderland on a free transfer.
It is understood the midfielder will be signing for the first-division side once he passes a medical.
The Wales international impressed Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy in a nine-game spell at the end of last season, scoring the winner against Norwich.
The 27-year-old made 12 starts for Pompey and eight appearances from the bench.
Robinson, who has 16 Wales caps, was given a three-year deal after a successful loan spell at Fratton in 2002. But he dropped out of Redknapp's first-team not long after the deal was signed.
