The 48,000+ capacity venue will host the clash with the World Cup semi-finalists on 2nd April 2003.

"We're absolutely delighted that Sunderland have agreed to stage this fixture," said Paul Barber, the FA's director of marketing and communications.

"This is the first time the England team have played at Sunderland under Sven Goran Eriksson.

"It is a very important match for both teams and we believe the Stadium of Light is the perfect venue to host this fixture.

"After a fantastic performance in the World Cup, Turkey provide the most attractive opposition in our qualifying group.

"They have a number of players who are regulars in Europe's major leagues, including several who are very well known to us in England.

"We are really looking forward to visiting Sunderland and I know that Sven and the players are very excited at the prospect of experiencing the kind of atmosphere this region is famous for producing."

The Stadium of Light hosted its first senior England international in 1999, a 2-1 friendly victory over Belgium.

"This is a tremendous honour not only for the club, but also for the city and the north east region as a whole," said vice chairman John Fickling.

"The passion for football in this region is tremendous, so it is just reward for supporters that this exciting fixture will be played at the stadium."
