Sunderland have spoken today about growing rumours that they are about to sign current Wigan manager Steven Bruce and that any sort of compensation package to Wigan has been resolved.

A Sunderland spokes person insisted that they are nowhere near that stage and the club are looking at someone who can raise the bar in the dressing room.  Now that new club owner Ellis Short has taken over, the club has been inundated with applications for a job.

Chairman Niall Quinn said, "It goes without saying that the search for a new manager has started and we will take whatever time is necessary to make this important appointment. It is imperative that we find somebody who will raise the bar and introduce a whole new mentality to our dressing room."
