Sunderland Made Chopra Move

In an interview explaining that he'd sought advice from former team-mate Alan Shearer, the 22-year-old told The Sun that Newcastle blocked any talks with their Wearside rivals.

Chopra said: “I asked Newcastle last season if I could go on loan. But they wouldn't let me because of all the injuries.

“Then when Michael Owen got injured, the manager said to stay. But it was only in the last five or six games I started to play. I needed a run of games, not to be playing and then back on the bench.

“Newcastle offered me a one-year extension but I decided to drop down a division.

“I spoke to Alan and also to Steve Harper, who was on loan at Stockport when Dave Jones was manager there. Alan told me to go to a club where I would be playing every week.

“Sunderland came in for me. But being a Geordie — the club would not let that happen!

“And when I went to Cardiff to meet Dave Jones and heard his plans, I made my decision.

“Now it's great to be playing every week — and scoring.”

Chopra has been prolific in-front of goal this season, scoring 7 times to put Cardiff 6 points clear at the top of the Championship.

Meanwhile, Sunderland succumbed to a 4-1 defeat away to Preston North End today. The Black Cats now lie in 17th position in the Coca-Cola Championship.
