The Trinidad & Tobago international has joined his World Cup team-mates, Carlos Edwards and Dwight Yorke on Wearside.
John signed a 2-and-a-half-year deal after his Coventry contract expired.
He has played for many clubs inside, and outside of England. These include, Nottingham Forest, Birmingham City and Columbus Crew.
