Sunderland to swoop for Henchoz?

Last updated : 18 June 2006 By Martyn Bowers

Henchoz, 31, impressed in the early parts of last season, forming a formidable defensive partnership with Arjan DeZeeuw. Despite his good start and rave reviews, Henchoz lost his place to Paul Scharner after a string of below par performances, culminating in his release at the end of the season.

If recent reports are believed, Sunderland are hoping to recruit Henchoz, who has also been interesting Premiership new boys Sheffield United, in a bid to tighten up a defence that shipped 69 goals last season.

A new defender is a must for the Mackems, after the surprising release of Gary Breen, leaving the north-east outfit short in numbers at the back.

Signing Henchoz would be a cheap option for Sunderland as no transfer fee would be involved, although Wages could be a stumbling block. It is hoped that Henchoz, with his vast Premiership experience can spear-head the charge back into the Premiership at the first time of asking.
