Sunderland won the trophy for a second successive year after beating a Newcastle United side that inlcluded former Magpie legend, Peter Beardsley. Unsurprisingly, the cat got the bird in the final when the Black Cats beat the Magpies 3-0. Sunderland youngster, Jamie Chandler - who broke his leg last week in an FA Youth Cup game last week - was presented with the award as Roy Keane was unable to attend. "It's an honour," said Chandler. "The lads did really well and we went close to losing the semi-final but somehow clawed it back."Then to beat Newcastle in the final was special - it was a great team effort and I was proud of all the lads."The Media Masters tournament, in its third year, includes teams from the media and from professional clubs across the North-East, who are all drawn into groups before a knockout stage commences. The Sunderland team consisted of: Nick Alexander (website editor), Martin Walker (media and PR officer), Kenny McIver (head of print and design), Dave Binningsley (senior physio), Mike Clegg (strength and conditioning coach), Damon Voss (physio), Scott Ainsley (sports scientist), Pete Brand (physio) and Ben Ryan (the club's one allocated non-employee).
