Thornton had to withdraw from the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad for their game with Russia this weekend with what was thought to be a serious knee injury he first sustained in the league game with Preston North End.
However, the injury has been diagnosed as just a strain and the midfielder is almost certain to be fit for the Black Cats next first division fixture against Crystal Palace next saturday.
