Uncertain Future For Trio

Goalkeeper Oscar Ustari was a free agent but signed a contract that runs only until the end of the season, while defenders Santiago Vergini and Marcos Alonso both joined on loan from Estudiantes and Fiorentina respectively.

Gus Poyet: “The deals do not automatically become permanent if we stay up.

“But of course I like them – that is why I brought them here.

“The problem is, we don’t know what our situation is going to be next season.

“Until that is resolved, we can’t make offers to them – and it would not be fair to ask them to commit to us, either.

“What is good is that we know them, and it is always best if you know a player before you bring them to the club.

“You know how they react, their character – everything.

“In my experience, when I have had players on loan and then brought them in full-time, they have always been spectacular for the club.

“You know them so well, you don’t make a mistake.

“With someone completely new, who knows?

“But Fabio Borini, Ki Sung-Yueng, Ondrej Celustka, Marcos Alonso, Oscar Ustari and Santiago Vergini, they are easy decisions to make.”
