The Welshman, 32, was told to find a new club at the end of last season after making just one appearance in 2 years for the east-anglian outfit.

He has signed a one-year contract with an option of a further year.

Young Ben Alnwick, has already been given the number 1 shirt at Sunderland but chairman/manager, Niall Quinn, believes Ward's presence will spur on the other goalkeepers at the club.

Ward made 5 appearances for Wales and over 500 appearances for his clubs.

"Darren has played over 500 games and is very experienced," Quinn told Sunderland's official website.

"This is exactly what Ben Alnwick and Trevor Carson need and exactly what the club needs in that position.

"Darren's arrival will increase the necessity and desire of all our keepers to make the team and they must all push each other now."
