Sunderland finally broke down Brighton's dour resistance to keep up the pressure on the Coca-Cola Championship promotion chasers.
Julio Arca broke the deadlock in the 64th minute and Liam Lawrence picked himself up to calmly slot home his first goal for the club from an 81st minute penalty kick.
