Barclays And Sunderland Encourage Youngsters To 'get On With The Game'

This Barclays grassroots event is the second of four regional events to promote the Premier League's 'Get on with the Game' programme.

Howard Webb and Mike Riley took forty five children aged 11 - 15 through a refereeing master class, whilst professional coaches took them through a coaching session to reinforce the Premier League's 'Get on with the Game' message. This was followed by a Q&A and autograph session with Nosworthy and the referees.

This event is part of Barclays' grassroots commitment to encouraging children to respect the ref, with further events taking place at Everton (20/11/2008) and Tottenham Hotspur (11/12/2008). In addition, Barclays will be promoting the programme across all their 200 Barclays Spaces for Sports sites to encourage the 60,000 people who use them to 'Get on with the Game'.

Howard Webb comments: "The 'Get on with the Game' programme is a really positive move for the Premier League, but influencing children at a young age is just as important as they are the future players and fans. The Barclays events will introduce the notion of getting on with the ref in a fun environment, but having the support from the club and players, will have a huge impact on the children. I look forward to refereeing the stars of the future!"

In addition, the newly introduced Barclays Spirit Award will recognise moments that personify the Barclays Premier League's new initiative. Shortlisted moments announced by Barclays throughout the season will form the nominees ahead of the final announcement in May, to be judged by a panel of referees and a current Barclays Premier League player and manager.
