Brightest dawn after darkest night... and other assorted nonsense

Well it never rains but it pours, are we now dead and Bury-ed (my sincerest apologies, couldn't resist) or is the light going to break through the thunder clouds of our early season?

I'm always hesitant to say that things can't get any worse but the early hours of Wednesday morning were some of my darkest as a Sunderland fan. Our defeat, coupled with the not-so-super Kev's snub was enough to try even my patience.

Well let's deal with the little git's betrayal first. He cited his family as the key reason for not moving back to the Stadium of Light. Where were his thoughts for his family when he left us upon relegation to travel all the way down to Southampton? Family didn't play such a very big part on his mind then, and that was moving to the other end of the country as opposed to commuting a couple of hours.

So much for finishing his career at the Stadium of Light. In my current mood I wouldn't be upset to see that actually happen, though we will have to find someone other than the departed Dan Smith to deal his trademark horror tackle on Monday. How would that be for a touch of irony? I wonder if we can borrow Thatcher for the game...

On a more sensible note I for one will be remaining firmly in my seat when his name is read out, and though I won't boo him, his past with the club is now just that and whether his decision was for his family or his career he is just another player to me now.

I guess I'll have to mention Roy Keane at some point. I truly despised the man as a player, the fact that his thuggery made him so effective on the pitch made it a more bitter pill to swallow. And yet for all that I would have had him here in a second, I don't care what kind of man he is, or how he does what he does, as long as he wins games for Sunderland.

Though I still can't stand the man I feel the same way about him as a manager as I did when he was a player and I will be ecstatic if he gets the job. Though I don't agree with his methods he gets results and that is all that matters to me. He will bring a passion and a winning attitude to the club that has been lacking and unlike the mild mannered Quinn I feel he will not be afraid to let heads roll should they fail to meet his high standards.

The rumoured twenty million transfer kitty should help. If I was Danny Collins I would be heading down to the Job Centre ASAP. In fact a few of our players may well be worried for their futures at the club, we have the money for new players and they only have as long as the next transfer window to stop making excuses and prove they are worthy of the support they are unfailingly given.

In other news we've signed a Swedish international, chucked more deadwood, and are being linked with a high profile manager. People are talking about Sunderland up and down the country and for once it's for the right reasons.

The good players will keep coming as long as the money is here, any that would doubt the stature of the club will be sure to think again upon seeing a world famous footballer at the helm in the form or Mr Keane. If we can attract someone of his stature then surely the sky's the limit.

So where are all you supporters who said you wouldn't return till Murray was gone? What do you have to use as an excuse now? Get your arses down to the Stadium of Light and give Quinn the backing he deserves, I'm sick of seeing you come back in your droves when we are in the Premiership just to whinge at our side. Prove me wrong. Prove you deserve Niall.

Our club is in trouble but Niall's here now and he will be here to keep trying even if we don't get Keane and despite our results because he believes in this club, as long as he does things are going to get better. We may be on the ropes but certainly aren't buried yet.
