The 23 year old Campbell is one of the quickest runners in the premiership has played in only four games this season for the first team, after seriously damaging his knee ligaments against Manchester United.   It was hoped that he would make an appearance before the end of the current season as he was making remarkable recovery, featuring for the reserves just last week.

But Campbell now needs further specialist help after twisting the damaged knee in training just before Sunderland’s shocking defeat to Man City.  It was hoped that a rest period would solve the new knock but clearly it has not.

He will now have to go under the surgeon’s knife once again so that doctors can have a closer look at just what has gone on.
