The Black Cats midfielder, who has recovered from a recent hernia operation, was earmarked for a return to first team action in last week's FA Cup tie against Watford but manager Howard Wilkinson opted instead to give the England Under 21 player a further weeks training in preparation for the vital Premiership clash against 'Boro this weekend.

"It has been very frustrating watching the lads work hard but the results go against them and when you're injured all you want to do is get fit again so you can really play a part in helping the side move up the table," said Piper.

"Personally, I'm one of those players who needs a run of games to get properly sharp again. But we've had a few hard training sessions, had a tough Reserve game against Newcastle the other week and although the weather hasn't been ideal recently, I feel that I'll be fit enough to start by the time of the Middlesbrough game.

"Obviously the manager's got to consider his options and take everything into account but the sooner I'm back starting games for the first team, the happier I'll be. I'm desperate to help us get the points to climb the table."
