Sources on Wearside moved to reiterate the Uruguayan's insistence at the weekend that he expects to be at the helm when the new season gets under way in August after reports suggested all is not well at the Stadium of Light.
A bemused Poyet, who has been linked with possible vacancies at West Ham and Southampton in recent days, was at pains to express his intention to stay.
The 46-year-old set tongues wagging last month when he voiced the opinion that something might not be right at the club if it repeatedly found itself battling relegation, and appeared to express disquiet over his status as head coach rather than manager.
His comments came with the club seemingly doomed and heading back into the Football League before an astonishing run of results which saw it eventually end the campaign in the relative comfort of 14th place.
Poyet's outburst certainly prompted raised eyebrows within the camp, although club sources were insisting on Tuesday that he and director of football Lee Congerton were focussing on their recruitment plans for the new campaign.
The former Brighton boss indicated as much after Sunday's 3-1 final day defeat by Swansea, when he revealed his first priority would be to deal with the club's out-of-contract players and then have a short break before knuckling down once again.
Poyet said: "I have been talking to the people at the club, setting up things
I have finished the pre-season, everything is set, so I don't know, I don't know what I need to say.
"It's common sense
Yes of course, you talk about different things when you meet, where we are going, what we want to do, how much money do you get what is the idea, blah, blah, blah.
"I can tell you a hundred things you are going to talk about
Now do I know the answers? No, I don't, but that doesn't mean that you are going in a certain way.
"It's natural, it's normal, it's every single manager, every single one, so then we will see."
