Schwarz offered coaching post

The former Swedish international will remain on the playing staff, but will spend several afternoons a week working with the club's up and coming players.

Wilkinson said: "Stefan remains first and foremost a Sunderland player but he is also going to get involved with the coaching set up on two or three afternoons a week.

"Stefan has an enormous experience at the highest level in European football and has played in two World Cups, so it makes sense for us to tap in to that.

"He will assist Ricky Sbragia on a day-to-day basis and the rest of the coaching staff will support him. Stefan is studying for his coaching qualifications and there is no substitute for first-hand experience.

"I know the younger players will be very happy to work with him and will undoubtedly benefit from his vast experience."

Schwarz added: "I am a Sunderland player first and that will not change because I have been given this opportunity, but I am very pleased to have been given a chance to coach at the club.

"I am really looking forward to it and am sure it's going to be a good experience for all of us."
