"It is my intention to extend his contract beyond the end of the season and I have told him that," the Sunderland boss told the Evening Chronicle.
"I have been delighted for Jeff because he was not accepted by the fans straight away when he joined.
"You have to earn affection and respect before people take you to their hearts and he has done that."
