Wilko delighted at cup progress

Sunderland were pegged back twice during normal time - the second time by a goal with seconds remaining in normal time, before they battled their way through extra-time and won the resulting penalty shoot out 3-0.

"It was a big result tonight for us I think," said Wilkinson.

"It was a big performance, a big result following on from Saturday when, to the disbelief of many, I said I felt the mood had changed.

"It was important to carry that into tonight's game and they did that. In some respects, maybe drawing at Blackburn did us a favour in as much as we were able to go back out there quickly after Saturday and just prove ourselves.

"It was important to have the chance to go out and do it again and have to dig out the result in that fashion.

"Sometimes a result like that and a performance like that is better than something you've got easily. It's just a pity we've got Tottenham 48 hours later.

"We must make sure, we've got to make sure, that we don't pay for tonight on Saturday."
